Things I Learned While Living In Lubbock
I cannot believe that almost two years ago I was writing this post about moving to Texas! In reflecting on our time here I began to really think about what I've done in the last year and a half. It made me realize that this post could also be titled "Where I Became An Adult," because in all honesty Lubbock is where I first lived totally on my own. So here is a list of things I learned while living here:
- Appropriate use of the term "y'all" and how to say it in everyday conversation
- How to be a nurse
- Getting my own car insurance
- Having a budget
- How to plan a week of meals
- Two words: health insurance
- Another word and an acronym: Roth IRA
- How to be a wife (which is in progress)

Eclipse much?
Today was the solar eclipse across most of the western United States. This is the first one the continental US in 18 years. Thankfully I live with a granddad to happens to have welder's masks which enabled me to watch it without going blind. And I finally got my new sweet camera to document it.

Observation Tuesday: volume 19
Lately, I have been loving the Joy the Baker podcast. I listened to it on a few bike rides while I was in Montana and had to stop twice I was laughing so hard. Joy the Baker and Tracy Shutterbean talk about "totally important unimportant things" and it basically is like listening to two best friends have hilarious conversations.
We've had some rainy days lately, which I love. Getting me exited for Seattle!
I may have watched The Bachlorette last night. Such a guilty pleasure and I may be hooked for the season now. The guy who flew in in the helicopter is officially ridiculous and I think the egg guy is cheating because he has an ostrich egg which is really hard to break.
And I only have 4 shifts left at work. I am really going to missy coworkers but I am so excited to have a summer off!

Book reviews: Intersex, Beach Love, and Comedy
The Last Summer (of You and Me) by Ann Brashares
This is one of those quick, easy beach reads. This is Brashares first novel after the Traveling Pants series. She writes the story of two sisters, Alice and Riley, and their childhood friend Paul. The three of them grew up spending summers together on Fire Island, and this is Paul's first summer there in 3 years. Needless to say there is love, tragedy and reconciliation involved without much mental challenge.
This Is A Book by Demetri Martin
Demetri Martin's comedy central special is hilarious. His book is moderately so. I actually heard about it on Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me where they interview him and talk about his book, in which Martin has written the world's longest palindrome. He also writes some funny comics and other such stories. It wasn't as funny as I had hoped, but I did chuckle a few times.
Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides
I picked up this book from my mom's bookshelf about a year ago. She had never read it and I had no idea what it was about. In the midst of our move I decided I needed to read some books I had so I could get ride of them. Hence I ended up reading this one. The story is about Cal/Callie, a hermaphrodite (or interest as the books refers to it) of Greek heritage. Written as a memoir, Cal writes about his transformation from being raised as a female to choosing to live as a male and interweaves his Greek ancestry. There are some definite risqué parts but it is an interesting story and is a really compelling read.

I'm a happy Mishi
These are two of the most precious people in my life. One is brand new and has stolen a little piece of my heart. The other loves making rock piles and taking pictures on my iPad. By the way, Mishi is the Bangla word for aunt and my official title.
